HAND PAINTED PLASTER STATUE – 12 Inches High & 4 Inches Width
Also called Saint James the Greater; Bethsaida, Galilee,? – Jerusalem, h. 42. Was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. He was the son of Zebedeo and brother of Saint John the Evangelist, author of the Fourth Gospel and another of the twelve apostles. The two brothers were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee, where they were recruited by Jesus Christ.
STORY ABOUT HIM
After the crucifixion of Jesus, the apostle Santiago dedicated himself to preaching the new faith, contributing to the spread of Christianity in the West. An undocumented Spanish tradition supposes that Santiago traveled to Hispania to preach on behalf of Jesus Christ himself and that the Virgin Mary appeared to him in Zaragoza (in the place where the basilica of El Pilar was later built).
Santiago died beheaded during the persecutions against Christians ordered by the King of Judea, Herod Agrippa I (he is the only apostle whose martyrdom is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles). According to another medieval tradition, equally difficult to verify, his body reached Galicia and was buried in the Stellae Campus, near Padrón; There a temple was erected in the 9th century, towards which the pilgrimages of the Camino de Santiago were directed; Around the temple and the pilgrimages the city of Santiago de Compostela arose.
Santiago was considered the patron of the Christian reconquest of the Peninsula against Islam (giving its name to an important military order) and, already in contemporary times, both the Virgen del Pilar and Santiago himself became national symbols of Spain. His holiday is commemorated on July 25.
